Informational interviews are low-stakes conversations with other people intended to help you grow professionally.
While I frequently emphasize the value of informational interviews, it’s important to acknowledge that they often require time to yield results. These conversations facilitate organic connections that can gradually enhance your career. However, finding the right people to speak with can be a challenge, and there may be periods when it feels like you’re not engaging with as many individuals as you’d prefer. Patience and persistence are key, as the relationships you build will ultimately contribute to your growth.
To help gain more traction and reach more people, I recommend asking this single question, “who else should I speak to” or “Is there someone in your network you think I should connect with?” Asking this type of question helps create a snowball effect that can lead to less time finding people to connect with and naturally build relationships.
Informational Interviews and The Snowball Effect
The snowball effect refers to a process where something small or minor grows increasingly larger or more significant over time, similar to a snowball gaining size as it rolls down a hill. In social contexts, this refers to expanding your professional network.
When you ask someone, “Who else should I speak to,” you are potentially opening the door to other people in your network in multiple and multifaceted ways leading to a snowball effect. One person recommends another, and another, etc.
In some instances, people may interpret this as a way to align you with someone for a professional interview, while in other cases, it can serve as an opportunity to connect with individuals in a similar industry. Each scenario opens the door to valuable conversations and insights that can further your career.
It’s a straightforward and direct question, yet it can work wonders for your career.
Don’t hesitate to ask!
Important Questions to Ask During an Informational Interview To Help You Grow Professionally
Outside of the most direct question of asking to talk to other people, I also recommend other questions that might help you grow professionally. This can range from asking questions about books you might need to read, online communities you should follow, or thought leaders in your industry that might provide inspiration.
- What advice would you give someone looking to grow in this industry?
- Are there any online communities or forums you find valuable?
- Can you recommend any industry events or conferences?
- Can you share any books or resources that have influenced your career?
- Who do you think is doing innovative work in our field?
